FOCUS on Sustainability
The FOCUS on Sustainability Program aims to work with councils to implement and embed sustainability practices and polices which create a more sustainable environment in the Hunter, Central and Lower North Cost region.
FOCUS stands for Facilitating the Ongoing Commitment to United Solutions, and is a founding premis of HCCREMS. The FOCUS on Sustainability program will:
- Deliver capacity building opportunities for council staff accross a myriad of sustainability and management initiatives;
- Develop resources and tools to assist councils in implementing sustainability and environmental protection initiatives;
- Design and deliver regionalised community awareness and education campaigns on sustainability; and
- Facilitate partnerships and resource sharing between councils to improve the delivery and implementation of sustainability intiatives.
FOCUS on Sustainability is being assisted by the New South Wales Government through its Environmental Trust

FOCUS on Facilities - Supports councils to save energy and water in their own facilities and operations

FOCUS on Natural Assets - Supports councils to protect and manage their natural assets as part of the council infrastructure

Councillor professional development - Including briefings on good governance in relation to the principles of Ecological Sustainable Development as outlined in the Local Government Act

|
Community Arts and Education - Designing and delivering regionalised community awareness and education campaigns around sustainability issues
|
|
Environmental Compliance - Implementing a strategic range of projects that enable Councils to assess and evaluate their internal systems to increase levels of internal compliance with legislation and policies

Sustainable Urban Water Management - Continuing HCCREMS decade long regional program to build the capacity of our member councils for improved urban water, stormwater and potable water management. Promotes the uptake of Water Sensitive Urban Design and Integrated Water Cycle Management

| FOCUS on Climate Change - supports councils to design and implement community educationa nd internal staff education projects around the regional climate change research conducted by HCCREMS. |
| FOCUS on Sustainable Procurement - supports councils to increase the level of sustainable procurement by developing policies and resources for use by council to change internal procurement practices. |
| It's Better In Your Back Pocket - A series of FREE workshops being delivered across the region to help people save serious money on their energy and water bills. |
