NB. Attendance at this event is restricted to staff from those councils participating in the Regional Contaminated Land Program (Hunter Region). These include Mid Coast, Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock, Dungog, Singleton, Muswellbrook and Upper Hunter Councils.  


As land managers, Councils are responsible for ensuring that contamination on either community or operational land (e.g. public parks, sport fields, road reserves, and landfill sites) arising from a site’s history does not harm the environment or public health. Common historical land uses causing contamination of Council lands include former landfills, night soil sites, gasworks, mines, council depots, uncontrolled fill, and derelict underground petroleum storage systems (UPSS).

This workshop is the first step in a new regional program to support Councils identify, prioritise and manage the risk posed by contamination on land they own or manage. It will directly assist Councils:

  • Develop a robust plan, model procedures and decision-making processes for identifying contamination across Council land portfolios
  • Develop and apply a risk based framework for prioritising the management of sites
  • Build internal staff capacity to identify and manage contaminated land issues affecting Council owned and managed land.


Workshop Purpose

This workshop will be delivered by Luke Speechley from Nation Partners, and will focus on:

  • The rationale for developing a contaminated land management plan for Council land underpinned by a risk framework
  • Identifying key issues and needs of Councils to be addressed through the regional program
  • Providing an overview of the program design, activities and outputs, including activities and inputs required of participating Councils.
