In late 2008 a series of induction briefings on Ecologically Sustainable Development and Land Use planning were delivered to newly elected Councillors across the HCCREMs region of NSW.

13 briefings were delivered in partnership with Hunter Councils’ Local Government Training Institute to 84 Councillors across nine Councils.

The content and design of the briefings were informed by an extensive ‘needs analysis’ which saw HCCREMS engaging with outgoing Councillors; General Managers, corporate services and environment staff.

92% of participants rated the session as “very or extremely relevant”. 89% of participants identified that the briefings had improved and clarified their understanding of “ESD”.

A significant number of Councillors have indicated that further briefings would be useful; and HCCREMs has now started on the design of ‘Phase 2’ of the regional ‘sustainability’ professional development program for Councillors.

Participant feedback to date suggests that Councillors would like more information on land use planning and climate change. More time will be provided for Councillors to engage in practical ‘problem solving’ discussion sessions on relevant local topics.

This project has been assisted by the New South Wales Government through its Environmental Trust
