Constructed Wetlands and Stormwater Harvesting

Wyong Council hosted a tour of various constructed wetland systems in the Porter's Creek Catchment. A range of staff from Wyong Council were on hand to discuss design, construction and maintenance of constructed wetlands. Stormwater harvesting to protect the SEPP 14 Porter's Creek wetland and reduce potable water demand in the LGA were covered. HCCREMS provided an overview of the hydrological indeces from the 'WSUD for Catchments above Wetlands' planning documents.

Managing Pollution in Coastal Lakes and Confined Estuaries

Dr Peter Scanes, NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change, provided an overview of developments in our understanding of confined estuaries and coastal lakes based on extensive research of these systems in NSW. Participants discussed how Dr Scanes' work, including recent modelling of the Great Lakes system, might inform their own decisions as to how to monitor and manage coastal lakes in their area.

Natural Asset Management for Local Government - Urban Creeks

Newcastle, Fairfield and Kurringgai Councils provided case studies on how they manage urban creeks under their care and control - as part of the regional FOCUS on NATURAL ASSETS project.

The Quest for Integrated Urban Water Solutions
Two evening seminars were held to present findings from a major, multi-year ARC research program conducted by Newcastle University with the support of Hunter Councils and others. The evenings were hosted by the Newcastle Chapter of the Society for Sustainability & Environmental Engineering.

Local Water Utilities Workshops No 1 & 2
HCCREMS facilitated these 2 workshops to support knowledge sharing between the Councils in our region that are “Local Water Utilities”. Representatives from DEUS, HCCREMS and Hunter New England Population Health presented and sought feedback on the programs and tools available to assist LWUs to prepare Integrated Water Management Plans. A workshop summary is available to participant Councils via our Clearinghouse (password required).
